Rockefeller Center in New York City at Christmas Time
|
My daughter and I recently traveled to NYC. She skated under the Christmas tree at The Rink in Rockefeller Center on this trip. I think Rockefeller is prettier at night, but we had Broadway shows every night. So, we went during the day. It was still fun, and it SNOWED! It really was magical! Here’s what we learned:
Rockefeller Center at Christmas Time
Rockefeller Center is one of the most magical places to visit in New York City during the holiday season. With its sparkling lights, towering Christmas tree, and festive energy, it truly captures the spirit of Christmas. Ice skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center is an experience you’ll never forget.

Why Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center is a Must-Do Holiday Activity
Few holiday traditions are as iconic as gliding across the ice beneath the dazzling Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Here’s why this activity is the ultimate way to embrace the holiday magic:
1. Skate Under the Famous Christmas Tree

Each year, Rockefeller Center unveils a breathtaking Christmas tree adorned with thousands of twinkling lights and topped with a stunning Swarovski crystal star. Skating underneath this legendary tree makes for a picture-perfect holiday moment.
2. Experience the Enchanting Atmosphere
Rockefeller Center is filled with holiday cheer, music, and decorations. Whether you’re skating or watching from the sidelines, the energy is pure holiday magic.
3. Create a Lasting Memory
The small, intimate setting of the rink makes it feel like a charming winter wonderland in the heart of the city. My daughter had a blast! She is glad she had this experience (and marked it off her travel bucket list).
Where is The Rink/Rockefeller Center located?
The main entrance to The Rink is located on 49th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. There is also an ADA accessible entrance. It is located on the Rink level at the southeast side of the plaza through The Rink Shop.

When to arrive…
It’s best to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled reservation. Ticket holders may queue up in line for entry 10 minutes before their reservation time. You will be brought into the venue at your scheduled ticket time.
Insider Tips for Skating at The Rink
To make the most of your ice skating experience, keep these tips in mind:
- Book in Advance: The rink is incredibly popular, and time slots fill quickly during the holiday season. Reserve your tickets online to secure your preferred time. Get Tickets on site or online HERE. You can also buy tickets on site if they are not sold out.
- Go Early or Late in the Day: Mornings and late evenings are typically less crowded than peak afternoon hours.
- Dress warmly: While skating will keep you moving, NYC can be quite chilly in December. It’s best to wear layers, gloves, and a hat.
- Capture the Moment: Remember to take photos! The rink is a picturesque spot, especially at night when the Christmas Tree and surrounding buildings are illuminated.
- Skate Time: Your 1-hour skate time includes getting your skates and putting them on. You might have to wait for a Zamboni to clear the ice. The rink is also cleared if someone wants to propose.
- Be Careful! Accidents happen. You don’t want to spend the remainder of your vacation in a hospital. You don’t want to go home in a cast. It’s best to just take it easy while skating.

This Rockefeller skating rink is so popular that even we in the Philippines have heard so much about it. It’s only been recent, though, that I watched a documentary that talks about its history and its significance to the New York City that it is today. Not sure how to feel about the shady part of its story.
I’d love to go there one day and even if I’m such a poor skater (I’ve tried once in a mall rink here), I will still do it because, well…it is New York!
Oh, no! Don’t tell me the rink has bad history! I’ll have to look it up. We just thought it would be fun. And, it was snowing so we knew it would be a magical once in a lifetime experience. I didn’t skate because I just knew I would fall and break something! And, I had to drive us home from the airport!
New York is an amazing place, with so many things to do. On my bucket list to go there during the holidays.
Oh, my it’s magical during the holidays!
I’ve always dreamed of skating at Rockefeller Center, and your description makes me want to book a trip right now!
The music…the snow…the tree…NYC…I can’t properly explain how magical it is. You just have to experience it.
Wow, this looks like the perfect Christmastime experience to have in New York City! Skating, the big tree, magical snow…so picture perfect!
It rarely snows in NYC and doesn’t last long so it was really special.
This is something I have wanted to do over the holidays for quite some time now. I remember seeing it in so many movies as a kid and thinking it seemed so magical!
I can say from experience that it is as magical as it seems. So glad we did it and can’t wait to go again!
I love ice skating, even if I’m no pro at it, and Rockefeller Center is iconic – this makes me want to visit New York next winter!
Everyone took their time and some just held on to the outer rail. Some were better skaters than others, but everyone was careful.
My family and I were there for Christmas a few years ago and I agree… NYC is so vibrant and so much fun during the holidays.
I’ve been to NYC about 25 times in all different seasons. NYC is always great, but Christmas time is especially magical.
I’ve been to Rockefeller Center at Christmas, and there really is no place more magical.
I agree 100% !!!
