Build Your Own Droid at Droid Depot at Disney World
|My kiddos had a blast getting to build their own droid at the Droid Depot at Disney World. Of course, this activity isn’t just for young ones – it’s also great for kids at heart. If you love Star Wars, you’ll love this activity!
Things You Need to Know:
Where is the Droid Depot located? Galaxy’s Edge, Hollywood Studios, Disney World. Next to Savi’s Workshop in the same area (shopping center?) as the Milk Stand and Den of Antiquities.
Do I need a reservation? No. BUT, advanced reservations are highly recommended. You can save lots of time and guarantee a spot by making reservations. You can check availability and/or make reservations for the Droid Depot on the Disney Website HERE.
How much does it cost? The cost for this experience, droid, instructions, APP, and cardboard carrying case is $99 plus tax.
Do I get to design the droid myself? Yes, but please know that this is based on pre-designed parts and what is available at the time and day of your visit.
Can I take my droid for a test drive while in the park? No, you can’t. This is to avoid accidents or hazardous situations in the park (Can you imagine hundreds of mini droids racing all over Hollywood Studios?!?)
How long does it take? Okay, I want to say that building the droid itself is 15-20 minutes, but you also have to factor in how many people in your group are building droids, the ages of the children building, waiting in line, paying, shopping, etc…SO, I would allow an hour for this experience. It might not take that long, but you don’t want to miss a dinner reservation or Lightning Lane just in case it does.
Is it worth the money? If you ask my kiddos, they will say “YES!!”. If you’re asking me (who had to pay for it), I will say “YES!!”. The experience, the memories, and the droid itself were worth it. I don’t know if my daughter would have enjoyed it as much when she was 6 and going through her Disney Princess phase, but she LOVED it as a 14-year-old who has seen the Star Wars movies. My son would have loved this at age 1 and will still love it at age 101. Plus, the Droid is very nice quality (not that I recommend building ramps and doing Dukes of Hazzard stunts with it). It’s one of those toys you take extra care with.
What You Get to Take Home
I took the above photo after we got home from our Disney Trip. My son brought home his custom-made R-Series Droid, a remote control for the Droid, and a cardboard carrying case. This (plus the experience itself) is all included in the $99 + tax. Of course, you can add all of the accessories that you like, but it will cost extra.
The Experience
As awesome as the droids are, I really enjoyed the experience of building them. We had spent quite a bit of time in Galaxy’s Edge, enjoying the immersive experience. We tried the foods, rode Smuggler’s Run, and experienced Rise of the Resistance (OMG, so good!!!). So, building the Droids was another fun part of our Star Wars experience.
This was our first visit to Droid Depot so our first order of business was finding it. Below is a photo of the entrance:
The Droid Depot is part Building Station and part store/gift shop. When you enter, you will see droids, parts, and merchandise everywhere – even on conveyor belts on the ceiling. The rustic depot is so well-themed – you really feel like you’re in a droid mechanic shop on Batuu!
Shopping at Droid Depot
Whether you build a droid or not, you can shop for droid-themed goodies at the store attached to the Droid Depot. Things you can buy here:
- Droid Spare Parts (or different exteriors/accessories/decals and accessory panels)
- Pre-Assembled Droids (some pictured below)
- Personality Chips for Droids (additional sounds and personalities)
- Backpack Carrying Case for your Droid (the cardboard carrying case is free/included)
- T-Shirts, Shirts, and Hoodies
- Droid Figurine Sets, Action Figures, and Play Sets (Example: Droid Factory with Sounds)
- Baseball Hats/Caps
- Droid Headbands (similar to Mickey Ears – except it’s BB8 or R2D2’s head instead of mouse ears)
- Droid 3D Puzzles and Model Kits
- Animated Droid Lamps
- Jewelry and Hairbows
- Backpacks (some for carrying droids, some Loungefly-type)
- Coffee Mugs, Travel Mugs, and Cup Sets
- Keychains, Pins, Signs, Pens, Patches, and other souvenirs – all Droid themed of course
- Of course, New Merchandise is added frequently!
Building Your Own Droid at Droid Depot
Anyone aged 3 or older can build a droid and can bring a guest. Just keep in mind that the Guest can accompany the builder, take pictures, etc…but only the builder can assemble the droid (AND, one person has to be at least 14 years old – either the builder or the guest).
First, after entering the Depot, you can talk to a Cast Member and let them know that you are there to build a droid. There is one line for those that have a reservation and there is another line for those without a reservation. So be sure to let the Cast Member know that you have a reservation, your party name, and reservation time.
Next, you will choose your droid – either a BB-Series (like BB-8) or an R-Series (like R2-D2) and pay. After paying, you will be given a metal basket and head over to the Parts Station.
Parts Station
After registering your droid and paying, you can select the parts you want to use to customize your droid. All of the selections will roll by on the shop’s conveyor belt. You will grab the parts you want and put them in your basket to carry to the Build Station.
What parts are available?
Parts needed for the BB-Series
- Dome
- Dome Connection Plate
- Body Sphere
- Motivator
Parts needed for the R-Series
- Dome
- Body
- Center Leg
- Set of Side-Legs
Picking out Droid Parts was so much fun! Of course, you can mix and match all the parts to create your own unique design OR you can make one that looks just like the movie versions of the droids. After selecting all of the droid parts that you need, you will wait for your spot to build your droid.
P.S. We visited in February 2022 and masks were required indoors at Disney World at the time, but now masks are no longer required at Droid Depot (or other indoor locations at Disney World).
Don’t worry about deciding which parts you need for your particular droid. There are signs and graphics to show you what to look for on the conveyor belt (see photo below).
The Building Station
When it’s your turn, you (the builder) and one guest will step up to the building station. Here, you will have a cast member assist you while you assemble your droid (don’t worry, you are also given instructions).
You will also activate your droid here, get your remote control, and learn how to use the Droid APP (find the APP in the App Store and in Google Play ). If your family and/or friends are making more than one droid, you can learn how they can interact with one another. It’s nice that you can continue your fun Droid experience even when you get home by letting your droids “play” together.

After your droid is fully assembled and activated, you will be given some time to test it out and play with it a little. Of course, you can play with it as much as you want after you leave the park, but it’s fun to see it in action right after you build it.
Then, you place your droid and remote into your cardboard carrying case (or other carrying case) and you are free to leave or shop for more items/souvenirs in the store.

My kiddos thoroughly enjoyed this experience. I honestly think building their own droid at Droid Depot was the highlight of the whole Disney trip for them. We did this on our last day, later in the evening, and it was a wonderful way to end our vacation.
Have you built a droid at Droid Depot? What did you think?

I want to thank Taylor Bailey at Disrella Travel for planning this trip for us and answering all of our questions! If you need/want help planning your Disney trip, she’s your girl! And, having a Disney planner is no extra cost to you. I actually priced the trip out myself on disney.go.com and Taylor’s quote was about $600 less than what I had planned myself! We loved our room location, our dining reservations, and having someone help us make decisions and figure things out!

As a Star Wars fan, I love this so much! Droids are such cool characters and to be able to make your own will be an unforgettable experience.
I agree 100% !!!
I didn’t know they had this at Disney! This is so cool!
Right?!? It is relatively new. It’s in Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios (which is all things Star Wars). This land was added to the park just a few years ago.
Oh wow! This is such a fun experience!
It really is! I’m so glad we snagged a reservation!
That sounds like a wonderful idea for the kids to build their own droid. Looks like a fun time for them.
This is a one-of-a-kind experience! Being a techie, reading your post kicks my excitement. Hopefully, one day I can visit.
This looks so cool! I love how you can mix and match everything and even control it!
Yes, everyone really had the chance to be creative when designing their droid.
I think it would be fun to build a droid. My kids would like to do that too.
As soon as I began reading your post I became excited and was thinking how much fun I would have building a droid. I’m a super geek and glad to see that you mentioned that it is also fun for kids AT HEART.

It was so much fun!
The star wars part of Disney appeals so much to me as my fiance is a huge huge star wars fan and I quite like it as well. I’m sure he’d love to build a droid even if he was the only adult in the group haha x
There are TONS of adults there building their own droids!! My husband and I wished we had signed up!
That is super super cool! I would love to be part of this and experience it with my kids, just fascinating….I definitely want my kids to be exposed to tech.
My kiddos love tech too, and this is a great (and fun) way for them to learn a little about tech and mechanics.
