If you’ve been to Sleepy Hollow at the Magic Kingdom Park at Disney World, then you’ve probably tried the Chocolate Fruit Waffle Sandwich. This waffle is topped with a Chocolate Hazelnut Spread and fresh fruit. It is so good!

This Chocolate Fruit Waffle is so big – it is one of our favorite things to Share at Disney World!

I’ve come up with a copycat recipe (I use the term “recipe” loosely because it’s basically assembling a sweet sandwich) so we can enjoy this wonderful treat at home! You basically, make your favorite waffle, spread on Nutella, and top with fruit. Easy and delicious!

For the waffles, I’ve got a regular recipe, a gluten-free recipe, and a paleo recipe:

What you’ll need:

  • Waffle Maker (you honestly could just make pancakes if you don’t have a waffle maker. Waffles are more portable, but that’s not really an issue if you’re enjoying this at home.)
  • Nutella (chocolate/hazelnut spread) OR chocolate frosting OR melted chocolate
  • Fresh fruit – sliced bananas, strawberries, blueberries

Disney World uses a chocolate hazelnut spread on their fruit waffle. But, if you don’t like Nutella or are dealing with a nut allergy in your family, you can use chocolate frosting or melted chocolate chips instead.

If you don’t have a waffle maker, just make a pancake or two and top them with your chocolate and fruit. Waffles are easier to carry around an amusement park, but we’re at home so pancakes are fine!

We have a Belgian Waffle Maker and it makes HUGE Waffles. Just one Chocolate Fruit Waffle can easily feed 2 people. I can cut one waffle into 1/4’s and put the chocolate and fruit on each quarter piece for individual servings for the kids.

The best thing to do is to follow the instructions for your waffle maker. Ours came with a special measuring cup to get the amount of waffle mix just right.

For each (larger-sized) waffle, I used 1 whole banana, about 1/2 cup strawberries, about 1/4 cup blueberries, and 2 heaping tablespoons of Nutella (of course, you can use less or more).

Of course, you can use more or less fruit (and chocolate) than I did. And, if you don’t like a certain fruit, leave it off or add another fruit you like.

I mix together my waffle mix and put the batter in my waffle iron. As the waffle cooks, I cut my fruit. Then, once the waffle is fully cooked, I let it cool down a little bit. I spread on all the Nutella/Chocolate that I want and then top it with my fruit. It’s super easy!

Gluten-Free Recipe

Nutella is naturally gluten-free. Strawberries, blueberries, and bananas are naturally gluten-free. So, really, all you need is to find some gluten-free pancake/waffle mix or make your own from scratch.

You can make your own home-made gluten-free waffle mix (see recipe below) or you can be lazy like me and buy the pre-packaged mix at the grocery store.

Paleo Waffle Recipe

You can make homemade Paleo Waffles or try some of the great pre-packaged mixes on the market. My favorite Paleo pre-packaged pancake and waffle mixes are Birch Benders and Simple Mills.

Above: I love Birch Benders Pancake and Waffle Mix. This mix only needs water, but when I make waffles, I always add a beaten egg to the batter. Don’t ask me why, I just think it makes them better.

Unfortunately, Nutella isn’t Paleo, but here is a recipe to make your own home-made chocolate hazelnut spread.

Another option for a chocolate spread is to get your hands on some of these Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips. They are Paleo-friendly and come in semi-sweet and dark chocolate flavors. You can melt some with a little coconut oil and …YUM! If you want that hazelnut/Nutella flavor, you can mix some blended hazelnuts in with your melted chocolate chips!

Tips for Perfect Waffles

  • When the waffles are done cooking, transfer the cooked waffles to a cooling rack. If you put them directly on a plate from the waffle iron, the heat from the hot waffles will create steam on the plate. This makes the waffle soggy on the bottom.
  • Let the waffle batter rest a few minutes (up to 15 minutes). The more bubbles you see in the batter, the fluffier your waffles will be.
  • No buttermilk for your homemade waffles? Simply add some lemon juice or vinegar to milk and let sit out for about 5 minutes.
  • The thinner the batter, the crispier the waffle.
  • Beating the egg whites will make your waffles tender and fluffy beneath the crispy exterior. So beat those egg whites – beat ’em good!
  • Let the waffle iron do its job and resist the urge to peek!
