The Silo Restaurant

After our exhilarating ride on the Whirlpool Jet, we walked next door to The Silo Restaurant (and The Caboose) for a stick-to-your-ribs lunch and ice cream.

See our fun ride on The Whirlpool Jet HERE.

You may have seen The SILO on an episode of Man VS. Food on The Travel Channel. In the episode, Adam Richman visits The SILO Restaurant to try the World Famous Haystack. You can see the episode HERE.

Silo Restaurant (Niagara Falls, New York USA)

Located in Lewiston, the Silo Restaurant is actually an old silo that has been turned into a restaurant. The food and atmosphere are very casual and the restaurant offers views of the Niagara River and both the U.S. and Canadian coast.

The waterfront here at Lewistown was once a hub for railway activity. This building (now Silo Restaurant) was used in the 1930s to hold coal for steamers.

I loved all of the landscaping and cute details (like the wooden bears) that decorate the outside of the restaurant. The seats, picnic tables, and counters within the Silo have been repurposed from old church pews. The owners also reuse/recycle the restaurant’s fryer grease to power gas-free vehicles.

The Silo Caboose

The Caboose is owned by the same people as The Silo and is located only a few yards away (adjacent to The Silo). The building itself is a repurposed caboose car from the 1930s.

This ice cream shop serves some fantastic Perry’s and Hershey’s Ice Cream. They also offer Sundae’s, Milkshakes, and Floats.

The Food at The Silo

The Silo (Niagara Falls, New York USA)

The Haystack is a Silo classic and is the sandwich that was featured on The Food Network. This sandwich is comprised of sliced Rib-eye steak, Mozzarella cheese, and toasted hashbrowns on a hoagie roll. You can get The Original Haystack or The Footlong Haystack.

The Silo also serves burgers, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and fish sandwiches. Sides include onion rings, fries, and sweet potato fries. The restaurant uses locally-sourced ingredients and their meats are organic and steroid free. The poultry is free-range and their eggs are cage-free.

If you’re wanting to try something that is specifically from this region, you might want to try the Beef on Weck. This sandwich is found primarily in the western part of New York State, mostly in the city of Buffalo. The roast beef sandwich is served on a kummelweck roll (a bread that is topped with salt and caraway seeds. It is popular with au jus and horseradish.

The Silo serves many sandwiches and burger options. My husband had The Haystack and he really enjoyed it. The kiddos had burgers and grilled cheeses and they were happy with their food.

Gluten-free & Vegetarian Options

I was able to get a grilled chicken sandwich with a gluten-free bun (pictured above) and it was really good! Gluten-free buns are available for any and all sandwiches and burgers on the menu.

The restaurant also offers vegetarian options and healthy options like a Blackbean burger and salads.

We really enjoyed The Silo. It is the perfect place to grab a bite before or after riding the Whirlpool Jet next door. The atmosphere is casual so we didn’t feel out of place with our wet and windblown hair!

This place is definitely worth a visit, especially for the views, the atmosphere, the hearty sandwiches, and the ice cream!

***Please note that The Silo is only open from May until September.
