Sue’s Tech Kitchen
When I first heard about Sue’s Tech Kitchen, I knew my kids would want to experience it! My kids love technology (feel free to sing “I love technology” like Napoleon Dynamite’s brother at his wedding) and they also enjoy helping in the kitchen. My son, our little inventor, is always trying to find new ways to use kitchen tools.
This pop-up tech tour was created by author/entrepreneur Randi Zuckerberg and was designed by a team of engineers, NASA scientists, and experts in technology. The hands-on exhibits combine technology and food in such a unique way. Kids are involved, entertained, and educated the entire time they are at each station. I must say I was impressed with the whole process and my kiddos LOVED it. They can’t wait to go back.
Sue’s Tech Kitchen is currently on tour all over the U.S. The closest available tour stop for us was in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta exhibits were located in an empty clothing store in a shopping center. We took our time and we stayed for about 45 minutes. The various exhibits are for children 6-11, but this is also a very adult-friendly experience.
The goal of this pop-up is to instill a love of robotics, technology, and coding in children. This tour may continue, but the ultimate goal is for this to become a dining experience that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together.
Here are some of our favorite stations at Sue’s Tech Kitchen:
Chocolate S’mores from a 3D Printer
The 3D Printer “printed” two dolphins on the graham crackers. After the printer was finished, the graham crackers were topped with whipped cream or marshmallows. This particular station got the kids excited about the future of technology and engineering. These ideas are meant to inspire kids to seek out STEM education and jobs.
Cap ‘N Crunch with Liquid Nitrogen
At this particular station, Cap’N Crunch Cereal is combined with Liquid Nitrogen. The kids get to snack on the cereal, learn about the states of matter, and pretend to be fire-breathing dragons. WIN – WIN – WIN.
Edible Helium Balloons
The edible helium balloons were really cool. They could eat the candy balloon, inhale the helium, and laugh at their funny voices.
Candy Chemistry Experiments
The kiddos were able to participate in a chemistry experiment where they created their own dry soda. They learned about acids and bases, performed a science experiment, and got to taste their sweet candy (it was similar to fizzy Pop Rocks).
Learning to Code While Making Candy Bracelets
My daughter was able to get a taste of coding while making a candy bracelet. The kiddos have taken a Minecraft coding class, but this was a different learning experience for her.
Miracle Tablets
After letting the miracle tablets dissolve thoroughly in their mouths, they could try the citrus fruits. The miracle tablets made the sour lemons and limes taste as sweet as candy.
Drones That Deliver Candy
My son was in heaven playing with the drones. The drones would fly and drop candy for the kids to catch. They even let him try his hand at flying the drone. He said it was a lot harder than he thought it would be!
My two kids had a wonderful time and I am happy that they learned so much. They learned about science, chemistry, technology, and engineering. It is a perfect activity for families that want to encourage STEM education in their children. It is a great experience that combines science, food, and fun!
This is a beta test, but I hope they tour again and/or open the full-service sit-down restaurant for families soon! We had a great time!
