The Best $110 I’ve Spent On My Kids
|Every year, at the end of summer, I take my kiddos out to eat and we have a heart to heart. I ask them if they still want to homeschool or go back to public school. Then I always ask them what they are really interested in learning the next school year. I was really surprised one year when they said they wanted to focus a lot on science and chemistry.
There was a nearby science center in Birmingham, Alabama. I decided to get a membership for the year at the McWane Science Center, and that is when I learned about the ASTC Travel Passport Program.

Not only can you visit your local science center (in our case, the McWane Center), but you can also visit science centers & museums that are located over 90 miles of the science center or museum where you are a member or 90 miles beyond your residence.
We still have a few more months left on our yearly membership, and plan to renew for another year when the time comes. We want to make a few day trips to some science museums in Tennessee and Georgia.
When we make plans to go out of town for a trip we always look up and see what science centers will be nearby so that we can visit. I make sure I bring my membership card and I.D. with me when we travel.
You can find the full list of participating science museums HERE.
So far, we’ve visited:
- McWane Science Center – Birmingham, AL (10+ times)
- US Space and Rocket Center – Huntsville, AL (10+ times)
- COSI – Columbus, Ohio
- Cincinnati Museum Center – Cincinnati, Ohio
- Adventure Science Center – Nashville, Tennessee
- Discovery Place Science – Charlotte, North Carolina
- St. Louis Science Center – St. Louis, Missouri
We paid $110 for our yearly membership to the McWane Science Center and we visited all of these other museums as well. It is a great deal! We have had so much fun this past year, and I’m so glad we signed up for the membership and became part of the ASTC Travel Passport Program.
